Fishing enthusiasts were recently left in awe when diver Simon Solomon and his team brought a massive Black Marlin into Struisbaai Harbour. A sight that attracted the attention of residents and visitors alike, and sparked off a lively debate. The Black Marlin weighed an incredible 297.76kg and was caught using just a speargun. Simons' catch will now hopefully be forever be logged in the South African Underwater Fishing Federation (SAUFF) record books.
Struisbaai is no stranger to Black Marlin and plays proud host to the annual Marlin Tournament. However, as this competition is strictly catch and release, it has been a very long time since such a powerful fish has been weighed at Struisbaai Harbour. Simon’s fish, however, was not speared in participation with the tournament. Cape Agulhas is not only known for its Black Marlin but is also renowned for its yellowtail, cob, and Steenbras – all can be found in and along our coastline.
