Bredasdorp, called by some Breyani-dorp, has quite a variety of things to do and explore for tourists. Growing up in this small town, after being away for a year and returning to the heart of the Overberg region, you appreciate the gems again this small country town has to offer. Bredasdorp is rather centrally situated. It is situated near the famous Southern Most Tip of Africa and Cape Agulhas lighthouse, as well as the nearby Arniston Roman Beach and Arniston’s famous cave, which make day trips from Bredasdorp ideal. It has many historical buildings, such as the old magistrate building, the historical English church, and the old shipwreck museum.

If you seek more of the outdoors, Bredasdorp has the Heuningberg Nature Reserve with hiking trails and beacons to explore. With an enormous variety of bird species one can enjoy bird watching and mountain biking. There are thousands of insect and fynbos species, like Ericas and Proteas to explore and a number of smaller mammals such as the African wild cat, hedgehogs, dassies, buck species, Cape hare and even rooikat and leopard tracks have been seen.

The Mediterranean climate in Bredasdorp makes hiking a pleasant outdoor activity, almost whole year through. From the mountain top, you will see a picture perfect view, almost like a painting of yellow canola fields, green crop fields, a mountain range and nearby farms. The scenery is a must for any photographer. There is just something about the crisp mountain air, mixed with the smell of fynbos from up there and the peace and quiet, with occasionally the appearance of a sunbird seeking nectar on a Protea. Bredasdorp is also known for it’s agriculture and Merino sheep. In our area, you will be able to find our national bird, the blue crane. A lot is being done lately to
protect this bird on farms from becoming endangered.

Some highlight events that take place on the calendar annually are the Cape Floral Expo and the Agri Mega Week, as well as the Foot of Africa Marathon. If you have some time to spare, you can always browse through our local shops to experience the country vibe or visit our friendly local library to read the newspapers or surf on the internet for an hour- all for absolutely free!
