Take a trip through the Elim Wine Route on the road less traveled
There is a new(ish) route through the Elim Wine Route that connects to Gansbaai. You can begin at Struisbaai and follow the signs for Elim taking you on a dirt road that becomes tarred close to the start of the Elim wine route. From Gansbaai follow the signs to Elim leading you through the sleepy town of Baardskeerdesbos.
Sights and sounds en route
Despite this road being fairly recently tarred it remains the road less traveled. You can enjoy a lovely country drive through some wonderful and varied scenery. From the Struisbaai side, you drive along the border of Agulhas National Park, through farmlands and on to the Elim Wine Route. Expect to see the usual farm livestock and some more exotic animals such as springbok, pelecans, flamingos and ostriches.
Into wine country surrounding Elim, take a quick detour off the tarred road towards Wolvengat and pop in for some wonderful wine tasting at Strandvelt. Lunch is divine at the Black Oystercatcher with a view across the farms towards the mountains hiding Bredasdorp in the distance.
The road continues past Zoetendal Trading Post (pop in for craft beer, cured meats, and wonderful wine) and through the quiet but friendly town of Elim.
There is a hill just past Lomond wines that is reminiscent of a pass, pull over and take in the beauty of the Overberg country surroundings.
