This is one of the best-kept secrets of the Overberg. De Mond Nature Reserve has an undisturbed view of the Heuningnes River and is home to a myriad of bird species. This nature reserve lies just 26km away from the town of Bredasdorp at the mouth of the Heuningnes river, and is considered one of the smaller protected areas of Cape Nature, but offers every visitor spectacular views, plenty of birdlife and much to enthrall with plant species, milkwood trees, and coastal fynbos. One of the best hiking trails in the area, the 7km Sterna Trail, winds through riverine vegetation, dune forest and stabilised dunes before following the coast to the river mouth and saltmarshes. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy De Mond’s prime freshwater and marine angling spots.
